About the Friends of the Cohasset Library

While the town budget covers many of the necessities of running our library, the Friends fund many of the programs that make the Cohasset Library an outstanding resource for a town of this size. The Friends raise funds through an annual town-wide mailing and used book and video sales. Monies raised support the following:

Homework Center: The Friends sponsor a coordinator and refreshments to support this wonderfully successful endeavor. Each Tuesday evening during the school year, National Honor Society students tutor any Cohasset student who might need a little extra help with homework.

Cohasset Reads Together: The Friends provide books and marketing materials to support the annual community reading program. A programming committee with representatives of the Friends, the trustees and the library staff choose the theme and the book(s). Programs are being planned for this year's selection, "In the Heart of the Sea" by Nathaniel Philbrick.

All Children's programming: The Friends fund summer shows on Tuesday nights, Mama Steph musical programs, movie days and periodic educational programs such as "Eyes on Owls."

All adult programming: Cohasset Reads Together, the Great Decisions discussion group, author visits, genealogy classes, memoir-writing workshops, resume-writing classes, monthly Friday morning movies and more all come courtesy of the Friends.

Museum passes: Available for check out any time, free or discounted admission is available for the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Children's Museum, New England Aquarium, Museum of Science, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Institute of Contemporary Art, Plimoth Plantation and more. Click here for the complete list and to reserve your passes.

In addition to simple fundraising, the Friends volunteer their time to help make the library special and available to all. Each week, a Friend visits the Sunrise and Golden Living Centers, as well as Elm Street homes, to reach seniors who might otherwise be unable to take advantage of library resources. Homebound visits are also available. Click here to find out about the Friends Homebound Delivery Service.

The Friends staff summer children's programs and provide refreshments at the Friday morning movies and other gatherings. Finally, the Friends host an annual luncheon to thank all volunteers and library staff for making the Cohassset Library such an incredible operation.
